What is Trappist beer?

Beer lovers can enjoy all kinds of different beers. A simple lager, a blonde beer or a bokbier. Another, and very special, type of beer is Trappist beer. What is Trappist beer? What distinguishes it from other beers? And which glasses go with Trappist beer? You can read about it in this blog!

What is Trappist beer?

What distinguishes Trappist beer from other beers such as IPA, blonde or stout is the fact that Trappist beer is identified by its origin and not by its flavour. Trappist beer is beer that comes from abbeys. It is not easy to start a trappist beer brand. To be allowed to call your own beer a Trappist beer, you have to follow 3 important and strict rules, which are enforced by the International Trappist Association (IVT):

  1. The beer must be brewed within the walls of a Trappist abbey.
  2. The brewing process must be supervised by the monks.
  3. Proceeds from sales must benefit the monks' livelihood and/or charities.

So a Trappist beer brand can have many different types of beer, with different flavours, under the same label. A good example of this is the beer brand La Trappe. This well-known beer brand can call itself a Trappist beer brand and has many different types of beer. Blonde, Quadruple, White and 0.0. Trappist beer is thus characterised by its origin and not by its taste.

What is a Trappist beer glass?

Although tastes can vary enormously among Trappist beers, it is striking to note that Trappist beer glasses do all look alike. Trappist beer glasses are sturdy and thick glasses. They are convex and round and stand on a base. The glasses have a real chalice shape, which brings out the flavour of the beer.

Thanks to the convex bowl of the glass, the head has enough space, which is important for Trappist beers. A generous head of foam cannot be missing. The Trappist glass is not only functional, but also carries a symbolic charge. The chalice shape is reminiscent of liturgical drinking cups in monasteries. This ties in nicely with the religious origins of beer, which is, after all, brewed by monks within the walls of abbeys. In the on-trade, a Trappist glass provides a striking and recognisable presentation. The glass exudes quality and tradition. Just what you want from a beer with such an authentic story.

So: printing Trappist glasses?

Trappist beer glasses are thus glasses characterised by their convex shape. The type of beer originated and originates in several abbeys. The beer is thus identified by its origin and not its flavour. There are only a dozen or so Trappist beers left in the world. Very rare, then!

Printing Trappist beer glasses? Of course it is possible! Whether you want to print your logo in four colours or have it engraved in a nice matt look: everything is possible. Print the logo all around, print on the base of the glass or on two sides of the glass. The possibilities are endless and we are happy to help!
